Lucas

(2010- ongoing)

A longitudinal portrait following the life of a boy named Lucas, whom I met at the age of 12 and have been photographing every 3-4 months since.

My initial intrigue stemmed from one of the men I write with in my project Black is the Day, Black is the Night, who went to prison at the age of 13 and attempted escape at the age of 16. He was at that point retried as an adult and sentenced to life without parole in a super max prison. When I met Lucas he was on the cusp of his 13th birthday and I felt compelled to follow him photographically into his adulthood; to witness the types of decisions he would be making, the ways he would present himself to the camera, to me, a stranger who he met at a wedding and let into his life.
